CHAPTER

I wasn’t moving. I couldn’t move. It took me a moment to breathe again.

It is time.

I would have preferred that wolf kiss rather than those words. My breath quivered as I inhaled. My father had warned me that the fear of the mind could weaken the body. He had trained me to be resilient to fear, but I had never been scared of him the way I was terrified of the Alpha.

I had been Daddy’s girl and he would never have hurt me. Alpha Moon had no love for me and could easily make me look like an old dog-bitten soft toy with its stuffing ripped out between the seams.

I looked up at Blake and saw his eyes blank with his mind far away. He was stroking his hand over his mouth thoughtfully. It almost looked like he wanted to beg me to withdraw the challenge, but that would be scandalous. This was the moment I must show my worth.

I pulled the zip up the last bit of the collar on my battle suit as I cleared my throat.

“Are you taking me, or what?”

I gestured with my hand toward the door.

“Yeah, just…” He sighed kneeling down in front of me to buckle a leg strap with a small dagger around my thigh. “Stay low, Father hates to bend down when he fights because of a bad knee injury he suffered two years ago. He won’t go for your face, so watch out for punches towards your ribs. He is right handed, so stay away from the reach of his sword. Uhmm…he has a good heart, really, so don’t make him angry, giving him any extra reasons to hate you. If he really unleashes his temper, not even the Fae Mother will be able to help you.”

I looked at him. He seemed so sincere and in so much pain since the moment he’d heard me utter those words of the challenge.

Why was he helping me? Or was it all a bluff?

“Anything else?”

“Well, I was going to ask you whether you could make one of those yellow healing cords that I can hold onto until after the fight so that I can heal you with it?”

“No, you are not Fae,” I snorted. “It doesn’t work like that, as soon as I let it go, the cord will slowly start to disintegrate.” I put a hand at my hip. “And besides, I’m not going to need healing.”

He smiled, not believing that for one second and then he pushed the door wide open to let me pass him. He knew he had to take me but he still didn’t seem settled.

“Is your ankle better?”

“What? How did you know that I had twisted my ankle?”

“I didn’t. You’re limping…very slightly.”

“I’m not! I’m fine! I’m strong!”

He didn’t argue, he only nodded, as he seemed to take in what I had said.

I passed him in the doorway, brushing up hard against him on purpose to show my authority.

He followed close behind me. “I’ll take you to Helena first then.
